Wow, those archives bring back some memories, especially the final one before the site shut down. Almost brought a tear to my eye (in the good way of course!) remembering all the wonderful things people had to say about the site before it shut down.

Also, if you still need editors, I'd be more than happy to volunteer my services again since I served as one before the hiatus. =)

*edit*

YAY, first post! XD

*snickers*

i'd forgotten that i'd sent in something for it. XD

i thought it was fitting that just about every person who wrote something for the last moongram is someone i know has signed back up.

man, none of us can let go of the past, can we?

don't worry, it's all confidential
I'm not sure that necessarily means we can't let go of the past...more like it shows we're all a glutton for punishment. XD

And why am I totally NOT surprised that of all the people who wrote something in there, LBethy, you would be the one to put in the Free at last quote? >_>

There will be contests. :D The first issue will be out on Sunday, March 18.

Sorry, no peeking. ;D

HitsujiKinno -- Yep, you're right, it's about as informal as that sentence gets. If you really wanted it formal, it'd be something like "watakushi wa sochira no neko wo tabetai desu", at least. I do think that looking at the different forms and usage and such is a great idea. I'll see if I can throw it in somewhere. Thanks for the suggestion. :D
HitsujiKinno- all things considered, "kimi no neko wo tabetai" seems appropriate as a funny expression on a sailor moon website. in an actual japanese language study setting, of course it doesn't. since LTG's article wasn't really showcasing politeness (and she wasn't claiming the statement was polite anyway), i don't find it to be all that big of a deal.

as an aside, from my years of japanese study, i've come to understand that there needs to be a context if we're talking about politeness. you can't just assume ~masu or ~te kudasai will do the trick. one could use honorific/humble verbs or indirect grammar to express the same idea in a more appropriate way.

Ok there are archives of the old moongrams? You mean some of my old work is possibly up too? OMG, I can't even remember what I use to write. It's been so long.

I just wanted to say that I'm glad lbeth doesn't care "what people thing about her". *hands lbeth a plushie*

I also wanted to say, in response to the piccies in tux's article... that I have some of those!!!

The Usagi walking with the ice cream is my favorite of the random handful of former, bagged, gashapon(sp?) toys I grabbed while in Japan, between floors of stores (our tour leader yelled at me and the other girl who wandered in there for holding the group up, but it was the ONLY sailor moon toys I had seen on the tour up to that point!)

I also have the one of hotaru. She comes with a cute hat with a pink ribbon that fits in her hands perfectly and she can kind of 'hide' behind.

*squee* Cute figures. Keep us posted on the finds.

EternalSailorSilverMoon: If you wanted to write for the MoonGram, you would need to submit an application to be a writer or columnist. You could also submit one to be an editor, but the editors just take the already written articles and proofread them for spelling and grammar mistakes. You can send an email to MoonGram@sailormoon.org or talk to Lisa or Jen if you are interested since they are the editors-in-chief. I think most (if not all) of the writers and columnists just came up with their own ideas for articles to submit, but I may be wrong on that.

Speaking of applying, Lisa and Jen, I don't remember if it's been mentioned or not, but the link at the bottom of the MoonGram for people to apply just takes you right back up to the top of the same page. It doesn't link to any type of application or anything.

meatballhead - Omg that's awesome! I totally agree with you. I would have held up a tour group as long as needed too! That stuff's hard to find! The Usagi and others are originally from gacha gacha machines (capsules). If they still had those in machines now I'd be in so much trouble. x_x

beth - I hate to say it, but there's plenty more than I've been able to take pictures of or even post. I think there was a posable Mars with really long legs and arms like Gumby. It was hilarious. XD

I'll take more pictures next time I go back, there's always something fun. ^_^

tux - i just wanted to say that i really loved your article this week. honestly, i love reading your stuff every month. just thought i'd mention it to you. plus you got me all hungry this time. :P

hmm, according to my horoscope, i guess i should be doing more reading. is it sad that i might be taking it seriously? :P

ferret  - Thanks so much!!! That means a lot. I'm glad that someone could get something out of it. It's hard to explain sometimes, especially with English leaking out of one ear. ;)

Can we set up a Image Gallery to host the images linked to in the moongram articles? This would ensure that as long as this site is up that we have the images associated with the articles. Of course we'd need permission to host those images, but I don't think any of our authors would mind. I just don't want articles to be dead simply because the author loses a server or something.

That's fine by me, you guys are welcome to the pictures. I'd be glad to update all of my articles myself since they are sort of picture intensive. :)

Wow, it has been a long time since I checked in last. The last moongram is dated 2007. I submitted a post under the Sailor Moon forum that would be a good start for an update. They are re-airing the show in Italy with a re-sub and there is rumor of it coming to North America.

I am making a moongram for this month, if liked, could it posted please?

I have a PDF that can be posted. It is not a huge one by any means but it is a start.

Well, the staff "Sailor Jupiter and Lisa" stop in everyone in a while but I have contacted them several times about different things and had little luck.

This place was active but slow, so I started posting like hell hoping it would revive a little. My efforts have not gone to waste.

So we just wait. That is the name of the game.

If you really want to do something then you need to offer server space to Scot and/or Lisa and commit to hosting and updating the site.

From some of Scot's posts I deduce (perhaps wrongly, perhaps not) that he has no desire or perhaps no ability to commit time to updating a site that has seen it's active membership dwindle to maybe 20 members, if that?
I'm sure the webmasters don't want to see the site get thrashed by someone who doesn't know what they're doing, but I'm sure that they wouldn't mind letting someone else take the reins if that someone cares and does in fact have a plan for bringing this place up to date.

Just know that if the site does get popular, it takes a lot of time, effort, and money to host and manage it... such is the nature of online communities... that's why there was a staff for all of the different areas in the first place.

I don't see this place getting too popular again, but with some TLC and some fun events for people to chat together or meet somewhere for coffee, play an MMO or the Role Playing forum etc. You could get this place going again.

Just that everyone's not in high school anymore... family, kids, college, jobs trump most people's time and energy.

I personally only hang around cause I have an iPhone and have my laptop attached to my back wherever I am. I don't have time otherwise.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

I would be more than happy to help. My only problem lay within the fact that my hosting provider does not allow custom modules, but the place I work for does. We are a web design firm. I will ask him if I can take a monthly deduction and buy some web space. I would get rid of those damn ads to start with and I think items coming back would help, maybe a "gaia towns" flash deal of some sort would be helpful.

@firebornx - You have experience in this field too I take it? If I am going to go through and start re-doing these scripts I might as well do it for a reason.

As far as an MMO, my boss wants to start a mobile game development center for the business, but is demanding to see s small MMO of some sort to prove I can handle it. I think maybe the right direction to go would be to get Jen and Scott to maybe use this site to sponsor it, maybe you can grow it that way.
Life is like an orange, it is small, round and has a few pips in it... Oh, and some have half of one for breakfast.
No I wasn't talking about a custom MMO for this site in particular I was thinking more along the lines of getting together in some existing system... alot of people here used to play MapleStory for example. Also, as far as chat goes you could use IRC or AIM, no need to build something custom... it would just be a place for people to meet up in real time if they had time to do so.

I have experience in web design but the way my schedule is I can't commit to anything. I've been putting off building my own website for a long time because of the wedding... now I'm working full time and going to school part time, homework, dinner, and wife takes up my evening hours. Weekends I might be able to do something if I'm not busy... but I'm looking at the possibility of going to school full time and working part time so if that happens odds are weekends will be full of homework.
Just a mess and will continue to be a mess until I can graduate...

That aside I'll try to help. I'm just letting you know straight out that I'm not going to put building this site over everything else in my life. It'll be fun, but if it becomes a job then I'll be done.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

The easiet approach, if we were NOT to have PvP and make it almost turn based, would be to have the backend of the engine just be a simple SQL via IRC. Then commands coming from the IRC could be split via a special character.

IE: è So to relay character position every half second.

uniqueidèxèyènameèlevel-title

Followed by an equipment packet.

uniqueidèslot1èslot2èslot3

So there is no random ghosting.

Just do a string split, grab an array and create the character. In the main game loop just check the IRC every 450 mseconds (to prevent data loss) and have the game update the irc every 500 mseconds on a seperate thread. Have the game save state every 10 minutes to a mysql table. When someone logs in, have their uniqueid as a bot in the chat room. The chatting will be their relay.

For protection just simple have a cross check for special characters maybe within a separate field. So to enter the chat room without getting kicked you would need a name that is. Say the uniqueid of an account was 1 so it would be 1░. Then we just strip the last character when doing a query.

Otherwise someone could log into the IRC channel and issue false commands. For global chatting between players as an example. In game they could type.

.chat hello

In the irc it would come across omdèchatèhello, the update loop would pick that up as something that has not been processed and loop through the array. Since the array starts with cmd, it will go to a case for commands then each client that picked it up will sub case the command as chat and thus spit out hello to their screen.

To prevent someone from creating a spambot that issues false commands via an authentic account you would simple need to go a step further and have a client version checker and check the md5 sum every 5 seconds. Then have the irc give a 6 second delay before logon commands are processed thus kicking the client before it can spam.

It would be WAY to slow for a full out MMO but for something simple kinda like the Gaia towns combo Maple Story. Where interaction is the name of the game. Then it could be kinda cool.

Honestly instead of devoting my time to the upkeep of the forum code, since things have come to far it is almost pointless. We could almost move the community one step further with a mmo. I have been thinking about making a simple 2d mmo for a while now and I think this would be a cool thing.

The scope of this forum does not allow me to go further into detail though I would be happy to chat.

Ciao.

Chat is good. When I get home I'll hop on AIM or IRC or something.

Although I don't believe an MMO would be a viable replacement for this site by itself...

An overhaul of the forum system would go a long ways to making this place hum again and wouldn't take as much time to accomplish.

An MMO might be a good add on but for it to work you need many people online at the same time, which just isn't happening for this site.

Methods of communication should be focused on. Add-ons such as the item system are fun but not the main purpose for why people come and stick around here. It's about community. Things that make access to the site easier, like simple cell phone access and maybe a real time chat system for the cases when more than one person are on at the same time.

Not to be pessimistic, but I think it will be challenging to increase the activity of this community. As FBX mentioned, there are very few active members left. While I love the idea of reviving it, I think that would be a significant challenge.

I believe Sailormoon.org owed a lot of its success to the show being aired in the U.S. and "new" episodes being dubbed. Without that influence now, I don't see a lot of new people coming to this site, and those that would come won't have much reason to be return visitors. This site represented a great Sailor Moon resource that also provided a wonderful and interactive community. Now, google image search can bring up tons of sailor moon pics without using quota, and the forums are just about empty. There are so many other online communities that can compete with this site and relate to more current nerdy pop culture trends, like Joss Whedon and World of Warcraft.

I think if we wanted to bring back the Sailor Moon community, it would involve a ton of advertising across sites and there's no guarantee that people would want to stick around on a site that's devoted to a single anime which is generally thought to be for young girls (no offense to the males here...I know this show transcends gender/age). As for old members, I think they prefer the convenience of facebook to keep in touch.

I see this site now as existing for nostalgia. If the goal is to attract new members, I think it would need to broaden from just Sailor Moon in order to appeal to a wider range of people. But ultimately, I'm not sure if that's what Scot and Jen want. If they did, I think they would have done it.

I think an MMO definitely sounds fun, but I agree with FBX that it probably can't replace this site. I'm sorry I'm so pessimistic, I just think that the glory days of this site are over and without Sailor Moon having the same presence in pop culture, we're unlikely to see any revival of this community, despite our best efforts.
I don't think it's pessimistic Hammy, I think it's realistic.

Honestly, I was thinking about it. If we were to create something then it would have to, as Hammy suggests, have a broader scope than this site does... otherwise you're looking at the people who are here already to support your "new and improved" site... and really there aren't a lot of people who are already here. The site as is, does it's job. It's nostalgia that keeps it alive really and if you go changing everything and bring in new people who are more excited about other things than sailor moon then you risk driving out the people who keep this site alive in the first place.
A better idea is to start a new site with features that a broad audience of people would like and then invite greppies to come play in your new playground. However, that also leeches what little life this site has and so may not be good in the end.

Small changes and updates are probably all this site needs, it'll keep the current members happy and perhaps bring new members in, all while maintaining the feel of the site.
I think though the first thing that would need to be done since people are asking for it, are to re-institute the moongram, re-compile the mailing list for it, and sending it out to people.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

The moongram is easy, if someone would like to setup me as the editor or give me contact to one I can upload a pdf or whatever format it needs to be.

It will not be a lengthy thing, but it will have a page of content every so often.
Life is like an orange, it is small, round and has a few pips in it... Oh, and some have half of one for breakfast.
Ok, I'll send Jen a message about the moongram.
Actually, for the last several months the moongram came out, I was in charge of it. There's just not enough news or community participation to continue it.

Thank you for your offer, though. It's very much appreciated. :)

there really isn't enough news though...

unless you want to make stuff up... like

"Spork of Death found in sandbox after being stepped on by one Hampstergirl"

or

"Sailorquasar finishes forum script in record time, only takes 1 decade"

or

I really have to dredge up old memories of crazy and random stuff...

Wasn't there an incredibly raunchy user that used to bug all the female users? Then in a chat one time there was something about Kley sending him a thread off one of her bras or something to tease him and he was all excited about it...
omg I cannot remember his username...

yeah, you could write some interesting articles about this place if you thought about it though.

Unfortunately, SM was a bit ecchi at times, it did attract the perverts. lol The thing that always got to me, why did they need to even transform, they had more protection with their regular clothes on!

I was not talking about general site news, not to much there, but just a general spit out of close matching subjects.
